Two jobs that people treat as one
Almost everyone who comes in with an electrical starting problem describes it as a battery. That is reasonable, because the battery is the part everybody has heard of, but it is one third of the story.
The starter is an electric motor with one brief task. When you turn the key it draws a large current for a second or two, engages a small gear with the ring gear on the flywheel, and spins the engine fast enough for it to catch. Then it does nothing at all until the next start.
The alternator does the opposite. Once the engine is running it is driven by the belt and generates continuously, replacing what the start consumed and supplying the lights, the fans, the ignition and every module in the car. It works the whole journey. The battery, in between them, is a reservoir.
How a starter announces itself
Starter faults happen at the moment you turn the key, and the rest of the car is usually behaving normally when they do.

A single loud click, then nothing
The solenoid engaged and the motor did not turn. Lights and radio stay bright, which is what separates this from a flat battery.

A rapid machine-gun clicking
This one points the other way, at not enough current reaching the starter, so the battery and its connections get checked first.

A grinding noise on start
Often the drive gear failing to mesh with the flywheel ring gear. Worth acting on, because the ring gear is a much larger job than the starter.

It starts on the second or third try
Intermittent starting is a starter's most common way of announcing itself, and it rarely gets better on its own.

A whirring with no engine turning
The motor is spinning but not engaging, which sounds wrong in a very specific way.

Alternator faults show up while the engine is running, which is the opposite pattern and the most useful thing to notice.

On most vehicles this is a charging system light rather than a battery light, and it means the system is not producing what it should.

Electrical output tracking engine speed is close to a signature. A healthy system holds steady voltage across the rev range.

Worn bearings inside the unit make a noise that follows the engine and not the road, which is how it is told apart.

Why all three get tested
A weak battery makes a healthy starter sound like a failing one. A failing alternator makes a healthy battery behave like a dead one. A starter drawing too much current makes both of the others look bad. Every fault in this system impersonates the other two.
So the sequence is the same whichever part you arrived suspecting: measure what the battery is holding, watch what the alternator produces with the engine running and under load, and see what the starter draws while it cranks. Three measurements, one answer.
The cheapest possible outcome
An alternator that is not charging is not always a failed alternator. It is driven by a belt, and a belt that is glazed, slack or has come off entirely produces exactly the same warning light and exactly the same flat battery for a fraction of the cost.
Corroded or loose battery terminals and a poor ground strap belong in the same category: cheap, common, and capable of imitating an expensive fault convincingly. They get ruled out first because it would be careless not to. More on that in belts and hoses.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which one has failed?
By when the trouble happens. A starter fault shows up at the moment you turn the key, with the car otherwise electrically normal. An alternator fault shows up while driving, or as a battery that keeps going flat, and it usually brings the charging warning light with it.
Can a bad alternator ruin a new battery?
It can flatten one repeatedly, and a battery run flat and recharged over and over does lose capacity. That is the practical reason all three parts are tested together instead of replacing the cheapest one and hoping.
Is it safe to drive with the charging light on?
Treat it as a short countdown. Once the alternator stops contributing, the car is running on what is left in the battery and will stop when that is gone, which can happen in traffic as easily as on a driveway.
