Why your car air conditioning stopped being cold
Three complaints that sound alike and are not: air that is warm, air that is weak, and cooling that quietly faded across a season.

Why is my car air conditioning not blowing cold?
Decide first which of three complaints you actually have, because they point in different directions. Air that is warm means the system is not cooling, and the usual reason is that refrigerant has escaped: a sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so a low charge means a leak, which is why topping it up is a delay and not a repair. Air that is cold but weak means the cooling is working and not enough of it is reaching you, which is an airflow problem such as a blocked cabin filter or a failing blower. Cooling that faded gradually across a season is the slow version of the first one. Cold at speed and warm at a stop light is a fourth and more specific pattern, and it points at airflow across the condenser at the front of the car.
What the system is actually doing
Car air conditioning does not make cold. It moves heat out of the cabin and dumps it outside, using a refrigerant that is compressed, cooled until it condenses into a liquid, then allowed to expand and evaporate again. Evaporation is the part that absorbs heat, and it happens in a small radiator behind the dashboard with the cabin air blown across it.
That is worth holding onto, because it explains why so many different failures produce the same complaint. The compressor, the condenser at the front of the car, the expansion device, the evaporator, the fans, the cabin filter and the electrical controls all have to work for cold air to arrive at the vents. Any one of them can be the reason it does not.
Air that is warm
The most common cause is low refrigerant, and the important thing about that sentence is what it implies. An air conditioning system is sealed. It does not consume refrigerant the way an engine consumes oil. If the charge is low, it escaped, and the leak is the actual fault. Refilling without finding it means paying to fill the atmosphere again in a few months.
Systems are also designed to protect themselves. Below a certain pressure a low pressure switch will refuse to engage the compressor, which is why a system that is low often blows warm instead of merely cool. The clutch never pulls in.
Other reasons for genuinely warm air include a compressor or its clutch that has failed, a blockage in the system, an expansion valve or orifice tube that has stopped metering correctly, and electrical faults in the control circuit. Some vehicles use a blend door behind the dashboard to mix hot and cold air, and when its actuator fails the system can be working perfectly while delivering heat.
Air that is cold but weak
If the air arriving is cold and there simply is not much of it, the cooling side may be fine. The usual first suspect is the cabin air filter, which in this climate collects pollen, dust and enough organic material to restrict flow noticeably within a year. It is a cheap part and an easy check, so it is the sensible place to start.
Beyond that, a blower motor that is on its way out often works at some speeds and not others, or works intermittently. A failed blower resistor produces a very recognizable version of that: full speed works, the lower settings do nothing. And an evaporator that has frozen over will choke airflow completely until it thaws, which is itself a symptom of something else being wrong.
Cooling that faded over a season
This is the one people put off, because there is no day on which the system broke. It simply is not what it was last summer. A slow decline usually means a slow leak, and a slow leak is easier and cheaper to address before the system runs dry and moisture and air get in, which is what damages components instead of merely emptying them.
A gradual loss of performance also comes from a condenser packed with debris. It sits at the very front of the vehicle, ahead of the radiator, and it collects road film, leaves and insects over years. If it cannot shed heat, the system cannot cool, and that decline is gradual by nature.
Two symptoms worth reacting to promptly
Noise when the air conditioning engages, particularly grinding or a loud rattle, can mean a compressor coming apart. That matters beyond the compressor itself, because debris from a failing one travels through the whole system and turns a component replacement into a much larger job.
A smell when the system starts, damp or musty, generally comes from microbial growth on a permanently wet evaporator. In a humid climate this is common, not alarming, but it is worth dealing with, and running the fan without cooling for the last minute of a journey helps dry things out.

Is low refrigerant normal over time?
A sealed system should not lose refrigerant. If the level is low, it went somewhere, which means there is a leak. That is why a top up on its own is a temporary measure, not a fix.
Why is my air cold at speed but warm at a stop light?
That pattern often points at airflow across the condenser at the front of the vehicle. Moving forces air through it, and at a standstill the cooling fan has to do that job instead, so cooling that disappears in traffic is worth investigating.
Is weak airflow the same problem as warm air?
