Full synthetic against conventional oil
The difference is not that one is slippier than the other. It is that one was refined and the other was built, and that shows up when things get hot.
The short answer
Is full synthetic oil better than conventional?
Yes, but the difference is consistency and not magic. Conventional oil is refined from crude, so its molecules end up in a range of shapes and sizes. Synthetic is built to a specification, so they are far more uniform, and that uniformity is what produces better behavior at high and low temperature and better resistance to breaking down. Where it shows is heat, which is the condition Florida supplies. None of that makes synthetic the right answer for every engine: the grade and specification are set by the manufacturer for that engine, printed in the owner's manual and usually on the oil filler cap as well, and that is the authority. If the manual specifies synthetic, treat it as a requirement and not an upgrade.
One is refined, the other is built
Conventional oil starts as crude and is refined until what remains is suitable for an engine. Refining sorts and cleans the material but it does not redesign it, so the finished oil contains molecules of a range of shapes and lengths, along with traces of what nature happened to include, notably sulfur and waxes.
Full synthetic starts from the other end. The base stock is manufactured to a specification, so the molecules are far more alike than a refinery can make them, and the impurities are simply never in the mixture.
Nearly every practical difference between the two comes out of that one fact. A fluid made of similar molecules behaves more predictably than a fluid made of assorted ones, and an engine is a place where predictable behavior is worth paying for.
Where the difference actually shows
At moderate temperature, doing moderate work, the two are much closer than the price gap suggests. The gap opens at the extremes, and the two extremes are the two moments that do most of an engine's wear.
Cold start is the first. Most engine wear happens in the seconds after starting, before oil has reached everything it needs to reach. An oil that stays fluid when cold gets there sooner. Synthetic keeps flowing at temperatures where conventional has begun to thicken, which matters far more in a northern winter than it does here, but the same property helps every morning regardless.
Sustained heat is the second, and this is the one that matters in Florida. Oil degrades faster when it is hot, and conventional oil oxidises and shears more readily than synthetic does. Under a hood in August, in stop-start traffic, or towing, or with a turbocharger sitting in the middle of it, the more stable fluid stays a lubricant for longer.
Synthetic blend, and the high mileage question
A synthetic blend is what the name says: conventional base stock with synthetic mixed in. It sits between the two on both cost and performance, and there is no fixed ratio, so blends vary between products more than either pure category does.
High mileage oil is a different axis entirely, not a third rung on the same ladder. It is a formulation with additives aimed at older engines, seal conditioners and usually a slightly heavier body, and it is available in conventional and in synthetic. Choosing it is a decision about the age and condition of the engine, not about base stock, which is why it has its own guide.
How to decide, in the correct order
Start with the manual, because for a growing number of vehicles the decision has already been made. Many modern engines, particularly turbocharged ones and anything with variable valve timing that uses oil pressure to move components, specify a synthetic and a manufacturer approval code. Where that is the case there is no choice to weigh.
Where the manufacturer permits either, the deciding factors are how the vehicle is used and how long you keep the oil in it. Short trips, heavy traffic, towing, roof boxes, sustained heat and long intervals all push toward synthetic. A light-duty vehicle on longer journeys with a conservative interval is a reasonable case for conventional.
The grade is not part of this decision. If the manual says 5W-30, that does not become optional because the oil is synthetic. Base stock and viscosity are two separate specifications and both have to be right.

Mechanically yes, provided the manufacturer does not specify synthetic. If it does specify synthetic, going back is not a saving, because the specification usually exists for a reason such as a turbocharger or a variable valve timing system that depends on oil behaving predictably when hot.
What does a number like 5W-30 mean?
It is two ratings in one. The number before the W describes how the oil flows when cold, so a lower number means it moves more readily at start up. The second number describes its thickness at operating temperature. A 5W-30 is thin when cold and behaves like a 30 weight once warm.
